In a town without a resident vet, who answers the call for sick and vulnerable animals? For Albertinia, that answer has been Sr Ilse Wyatt-Goodall and the Vitalvet Mossel Bay team. What began as a response to an overwhelming need has now become a vital service, ensuring that the animals of this small community receive the care they deserve.
A Mission Born from Urgency
The Albertinia Outreach was initiated by Sr Ilse Wyatt-Goodall after the Mossel Bay SPCA found itself inundated with calls for sick and suffering animals in a town without a local veterinary service. With no professional care available nearby, pet owners had limited options, and the survival rate for cats and dogs was distressingly low.
Since its inception, the outreach program has achieved remarkable success, increasing the survival rate of both cats and dogs by up to 80%. However, when the SPCA ceased its involvement in August of 2024, the future of the program was uncertain.
Vitalvet Steps In
Recognizing the importance of the initiative, Vitalvet Mossel Bay and Sr Ilse Wyatt-Goodall took over the program in September 2024. Together with Tinka Smal and Lettie Pretorius, two passionate advocates for animal welfare, the team continued their mission without hesitation.
Tinka, a driving force in her town, and her sister Lettie, play an essential role in making this initiative a success. They handle all the arrangements — from identifying pet owners in need to setting up the venue and collecting funds in advance. Their tireless efforts ensure that everything runs smoothly, all without any cost to Vitalvet.
Community Support Making a Difference
The Albertinia Municipality generously donates a venue for the outreach days, ensuring that a safe and organized space is available for vaccinations and treatments. On average, 20 to 30 animals receive care per session, with numbers reaching as high as 52 animals in a single day.
One of the most critical services provided is Rabies vaccinations, which are supplied by the State Vet from George. With Rabies still a serious concern in South Africa, this initiative not only protects pets but also safeguards the entire community.
A Future of Hope and Care
The Albertinia Outreach is more than just a veterinary program — it is a beacon of hope for pet owners who might otherwise have nowhere to turn. Thanks to the dedication of Vitalvet Mossel Bay, Sr Ilse Wyatt-Goodall, and the selfless volunteers like Tinka and Lettie, this initiative continues to grow, making a tangible difference in the lives of countless animals.
Vitalvet remains committed to ensuring that no pet is left without care, no matter where they are. With ongoing community support, the Albertinia Outreach will continue to be a life-saving force for years to come.
